England & Denmark (October 2003) Galleries

01 - Kensington Gardens (October 16, 2003) : These are some of my photos that I took during our first day in London. We walked around Kensington Gardens and took pictures of the Royal Albert Hall and Memorial. We also visited an art gallery in Kensington Gardens, which is not pictured.

We stayed at the Oxford Hotel (13/14 Craven Terrace, Lancaster Gate), which is 2 blocks away from Kensington Gardens and the Lancaster Gate Underground station.

02 - The British Museum (October 17, 2003) : On our first full day of sightseeing, we went to the famed British Museum. I didn't take many pictures because I was too busy reading all the captions and looking at all the displays. When it comes to plundering cultural treasures, no one did it quite like the British.

05 - Arriving in København (October 20, 2003) : This day was spent traveling from London to København. We were able to get to Gatwick Airport from London via the Gatwick Express. Once we flew into København Airport,, we took a train directly into the city. The Central Train Station was a few blocks from where we were staying: the Mermaid Hotel. Public transportation in Europe is fantastic and relatively stress free. Also, the trains in Denmark were modern and clean.

03 - The British Natural History Museum (October 18, 2003) : Our next major sightseeing destination was the British Natural History Museum. Outside, was a really wonderful photography exhibit. We spent so much time at the photography exhibit, we didn't have enough time to see the whole museum. I think we only saw half of the museum (reptiles and insects). We didn't even get to the mammal wing, which featured a life-size model of a whale. There's always next time...

04 - Tower of London and Westminster (October 19, 2003) : On our last full day in London, we visited the Tower of London and walked westward along the Thames toward Westminster. Some of the sights we saw that day include the Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and Buckingham Palace. Oh, and David Blaine was doing something or other that we didn't care about.

06 - Nationalmuseet (October 21, 2003) : On the 21st, we visited København's Nationalmuseet (Danish National Museum). This museum is housed in the former Prince's Palace, and was home to members of the royal family in the 18th century. Exhibits span Danish history from pre-Middle Ages to modern times. I took a limited number of pictures at the museum because I ran out of film that day. Sadly, many of the ones I did take were blurry or underexposed. These pictures are the best of what was left.

08 - Rundetårn & Roskilde Viking Ship Museum (October 23, 2003 : On this day, Mike, Paul, and I made a quick stop at the Rundetårn (Round Tower), before catching our train to Roskilde. In Roskilde, we visited the Vikingeskibsmuseet (Viking Ship Museum). It was there that we discovered the wonderful taste and warming properties of mead.

09 - Christianshavn and Nyhavn (October 24, 2003) : This was probably our busiest day. In the morning, we walked from our hotel over to Christenshaven a residential area, to the east of the capital. Along the way, we passed the Black Diamond, København's very stylish library. While in Christianshavn, we also climbed to the top of Vor Frelsers Kirke (Church of Our Savior), where the narrow ledge and low railing scared the heck out of me. Afterwards, we visited the Danish Maritime Museum. From there, we took a water taxi to the Nyhavn district of Copenhagen. From there, we took the subway over Assistens Kirkegard in the Nørrebro district, where Hans Christian Andersen is buried.

10 - Malmö, Sweden (October 25, 2003) : On our last full day of sightseeing, all four of us decided to take the train over to Malmö, Sweden. While in Malmö, we visited the Malmöhus, a converted fort/castle that houses a natural history museum, a fine art gallery, and a historical artifact museum.

Afterwards, we tried to come up with places to go, and eventually settled on something our map called "The City of Tomorrow." We walked what seemed like hours to see the City of Tomorrow. To our utter disappointment, it was just a housing development. Mike summed up our feelings when he said, "Tomorrow Sucks"

11 - Going Home (October 26 and 27, 2003) : By this time, I only had two shots left on my last roll of film. I pretty much knew what I wanted to shoot, and both shots came out better than I hoped.

This was a great trip and I can't wait to go back to Europe again!
